about

The 2009 release A Familiar Path is the third by At War With Self, and features Manfred Dikkers, who joins Snelwar again from the Acts of God sessions on drums and percussion. Maggie Snelwar contributes vocals on the track Ourselves.

Acts of God departed from the first, all-instrumental AWWS disc by incorporating vocals on many of the tracks. A Familiar Path also has vocals on the title track, and Ourselves. I love bands with lots of vocal harmonies like Alice in Chains and Kings X, and tried my hand at this with the title track.

There is a version of the song Reflections from the first Gordian Knot disc (this version is more similar to the original demo of that song that led to the GK version). Diseased State is also an updated version of a song from an early demo tape.

I also decided to bastardize Heitor Villa Lobos's Etude #10 for this disc. When I studied classical guitar for a short time, I always appreciated the aggression and rhythmic intensity of this etude in particular. I wanted to re-interpret it with the addition of heavy guitars and drums (sorry, purists).

Thanks for listening!
